Key West is known for our colorful characters. From Hemingway to the infamous fire chief Joseph “Bum” Farto, the tales over the years have shaped our beloved “Conch Culture.” Key West Legal Rum Distillery, just a block off Duval Street, encompasses the more scandalous side of Key West’s history, and the owner, you could say, is part of the new generation of the Colorful Key West Characters!
Paul Menta has kitesurfed from Key West to Cuba, and places as extreme as a lake beside three Guatemalan volcanoes. After adventuring around the world by kite, he settled in Key West where he pursued a career as a chef and restaurateur. In 2013, Menta opened the Key West First Legal Rum Distillery changing gears from master chef, to producing high quality rums.
Located in a former Coca-Cola bottling plant, the nostalgia of Key West’s “rum-soaked past” is plastered on the walls. Guests can tour the distillery guided by this Key West legend-in-the-making and sample some of the libations as they browse.
The fun doesn’t have to stop there! Treat your guests to a customized takeaway gift including a bottle (or two!) of Key West First Legal Rum complete with a mojito muddler and all the fixings to make their very own Key West Mojito! Customized recipe cards created by our local stationery designer add the finishing touch to this unique memento.
